Preparing for Flu Season

Just because we are entering flu season, doesn’t mean that those flu-like symptoms you’re experiencing are the flu; they could be something else. Knowing the difference between this season’s commonly caught viruses can help you be more vigilant when it comes to intervention strategies.

“Everyone is guilty of self-diagnosing a cough, fever or chills,” said Dr. Ken Redcross, a board-certified internal medicine physician and founder of Redcross Concierge. “The first thing most patients will do is Google their symptoms and try to figure it out on their own, but there can be a lot of conflicting information online that can incite panic and could lead you down the wrong path for intervention costing you more time and money in the long run.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the total economic burden of the flu in the United States, each year, is more than $87 billion and racks up 31.4 million outpatient visits. “Nobody wants to miss work or have their child miss too much school, but knowing some simple facts about the differences between common viruses can help you stay vigilant so you know what to do when sickness crosses your threshold,” said Redcross, who joins us with signs, symptoms, durations and intervention steps for three common viruses that could threaten you and your family’s health this season.
